Step Into the Studio: Sarah Wilkins

The Sam & Lucy Fables, written by Alan Bagnall and illustrated by Sarah Wilkins, shares the adventures of two clever pigs, Sam and Lucy, who are always keen to help their human friends in peculiar predicaments. From fixing magic carpets to teaching fish to read, Sam and Lucy solve each conundrum with some common sense and a lot of patience. Each fable reminds us to be kind, curious and a little bit adventurous.

Sam and Lucy paid a visit to Sarah’s studio and told us all about their adventures.

‘We were lucky enough to spend the day with our friend Sarah and see how she created all the beautiful illustrations in our book. Her studio is a cozy place and the walls are pinned with a wonderful selection of postcards – they inspired us to try create our own art pieces while Sarah was working. Although we had trouble holding the brushes with our tiny hooves, we still had a lot of fun rummaging through her paint collection!’

‘Sarah and her partner Scott Austin have also created a spectacular window display for us at the Children’s Bookshop in Kilbirnie. It’s amazing what they made simply with recycled cardboard, a glue gun, and some acrylic paint. All our friends love it as much as we do!’

You can read one of the stories from The Sam & Lucy Fables below about how Sam and Lucy helped a man discover the joys of coloured pencils in creating pictures.
